James I 1406-37

Born: 1394 (at Dunfermline) Died: 1437 Robert III's second son. In 1406, shortly befor e t h e death of his father, James was sent to France for safety from rebellious Scottish nob les . T he ship was seized by the English, and James was kept a prisoner until 1423. The Treaty of London in late 1423 officially released him for a ransom of Đ40,000 and a pr o m ise that the Scots would not send more troops to France. On his return to Scotland in 14 2 4 h e made himself unpopular with the nobility and was murdered at Perth in 1437, partl y a s a res ult of dynastic rivalry. He was succeeded by his son James II.
